Mutual Aid Incidents - February 7, 2004

Ladder 728 operates at structure fire, Sparta Township

(Feb 7)  Icy conditions on township roads and two working mutual aid incidents made for a busy Saturday for JTFD#1. Members handled three early morning calls, including two vehicle rollovers. Later that evening, JTFD#1 members staffing JTFD#2's station during their installation dinner responded to a multi-vehicle accident on Route 15 South with multiple injuries and possible entrapment. JTFD#1 members rolled Engine 718 and Rescue 719 from Company 2 with Engine 722 and Rescue 725 responding from Co. 1 headquarters. Due to icy conditions, the first apparatus on scene had to park at the top of the mountain and walk down to the accident scene. Extrication was not needed, however EMS treated 7 patients. Traffic was backed up for a number of miles. On scene: Engines 718, 722, Rescues 719, 725, Milton First Aid Squad, Jefferson Rescue Squad, Wharton First Aid Squad, St. Clare's ALS, Jefferson Police and New Jersey State Police.

Later that night while JTFD#1 units were out on yet another vehicle rollover in Milton, at 1153 hrs., Sparta Fire Dispatch requested mutual aid for a fully involved house fire on Water's Edge Road. Ladder 728 and Engine 724 responded and found Sparta units working a fire in a large 2-story single family home. The fire was believed to have been started by embers placed on the porch which were kicked up by wind, eventually involving the entire structure. 728 was placed in service for its aerial master stream and JTFD#1 members assisted with overhaul. Units were released by command at 0300. Also responding was Chief 729 (Van Veen) and Captain 731 (Heber).
