On August 23, 24 and 25th, 2002, eighteen North Jersey firefighters and friends
undertook the challenge of
climbing the 6,288 ft. Mount
Washington in New Hampshire.
All eighteen successfully ascended the mountain in
three groups setting off from a base camp a few miles from Pinkham Notch.
The climbers followed the Tuckerman Ravine trail to the summit. Most of
the group reached the summit by 1 p.m. Saturday. From there, a number of
the climbers began the tedious descent of the mountain, while others took
the opportunity to ride the historic Cog Railroad to the base.
This “Climb for Compassion”, organized by JTFD#1
firefigheter Harry Western, is part of these
firefighters’ efforts to raise money to support the families of brother
and sister firefighters lost in the events of September 11, 2001. All
money raised will be donated to the Uniformed Firefighters Association
Widows and Children Fund. The fund supports the families of all FDNY
members lost in the line of duty.
